I keep my fields clean, but was mowing prairie grass on a retired neighbor's place Saturday. He's been clearing some trees in a clump in the middle of the meadow. Since he was a good farmer I took a chance and mowed through some weeds where I knew trees had been a few years back. Pulled out a rotten stump and a rock came with it. Broke two guards and three sections. My fault. He doesn't care if I mow it, it just seemed like a nice thing to do to help clean up where he was clearing. It never fails to amaze me how the old timers clearing by hand cleared all the good land and left the rocky poor land uncleared. Now anything anybody around here tries to clear, you find out why it was not cleared 100 years ago.
