Farmall C distributor - timing

My Farmall C was running good. I had overhauled it about 2 years ago..clipping pastures with no problem. Recently it began to run hard (like it was out of time) and then quit. Now, the only way I can get it to run is to loosen the distributor and turn it 15-20 degrees counter-clockwise. It will then crank, run kind"a rough and began to die.. What do you think is wrong.. maybe the distributor needs to be rebuilt. Please advise. Thanks. dan
