Phlogiston, My 2 cents worth...If you have crud built up in/around the rocker arm assembly, I'm thinking you should also check the cam follower chamber as well. This is on the right side of the engine behind the oil filter and distributor and has a long plate with gasket and about 4-5 bolts holding it on. This area is prone to building up sludge in older engines. The gasket does not normally come with a overhaul set but can be ordered. I'd guess yours has never been removed since the tractor(s) was new. I just did the one on my '48 M and got a 2 lb coffee can full of gunk out of it. I should caution you that it's alot better to remove the pan and insert a plastic sheet up from the bottom and over the main and rod bearings because when you flush out the orafices alot of that stuff will end up in the pan if not removed. When you remove the push rods keep them in order (back into same hole they come out of). Same goes for the cam followers. I'd put them in a empty egg carton. The extra couple of hours and the cost of a new pan gasket would be well worth it in the long run. Good luck. FB
