Replace the ground cable and clean the attachment area down to bare, clean metal. It sounds like you have a poor connection there, rather than a short. If you had a short, there would be high current flow through both battery cables, and both ends of both cables would be heating up. Since there is only this one point in the system that's heating, it sounds like there is a poor connection at that point.
