I frequent a forum where the post that gets a reply is bumped to the top. That's Ok there, I like it, but the forum is not that busy. Over here it could take your new post to page 3 and the history channel in a hurry. This is a busy forum. One problem with the format here is that the original post subject line is repetitive and takes up space with no new information or value add other than the reply posters name. you have to expand. The subject line should at least serve double duty as an original posters messsage line and a reply posters reply line without the re: or subject automatically inserted. A short answer, one liner, could be written in right there. This post "forum update" sucks up half a page already. If it bumps to the top your new post (and hope for an answer) is almost immediately on page 2. If you don't expand it's rather boring, Forum update, forum update, forum update, forum update......... Then the other side. If you are a poster looking for an answer bumping to the top can be a good thing. You can see if you get a reply you come to the top. You can bump yourself to the top for another shot at an answer, quick and easy. There are trade-offs.
Many forums just list the subject line and original poster and you need to expand to see what's there. Advantage to that is a long thread doesn't take up the whole front page. Buming to the top won't bump you off page 1 so quickly. Disadvantage is it is hard to recall or recognize the thread behind the simple subject line. Conrad might be right, there may be a better way.
Change is hard.
