Allan I have had a 706 with the 310 German diesel since 1969 and it looks about the same as yours when you first start it. It will also smoke if it idles for long periods of time, such as on a logsplitter. The engine uses no oil between changes (100 hrs) and pulls great has 8600 hrs +. Also I have a 826 with the 358 German diesel and it smokes on start up about the same. Had it on the dyno 2 years ago and it pulled right at 96 hp, it is stock with orginal injection pump and has right 8000 hrs. Other than the fact they start hard below freezing, I think they are great engines put on a engine heater and I think you will get along just fine.
