Allan, from the looks of the parts book, there should be a base that bolts to to the platform, and a angle-iron hold-down at the top that attaches to the base with tie-down rods. On the 686 that we used to have, the previous owners removed the right step and replaced it with a battery box, and put both batteries down there. That really worked well, it was easy to get to, and got the batteries close to the starter, where they belong.
