Rudi,
I did what you suggested, and it helped. What I found was that the outside edges of the throwout bearing were getting chewed up by the levers when I pressed the clutch in (that was the grinding sound I heard and felt on the pedal). I adjusted the levers, and that made the clutch work a lot better; however, I still have the 2nd/reverse grinding problem. I watched my BN clutch as I pushed the clutch lever down, and noticed how the shaft and disk slowed and stopped. I did this with my Cub, and found that the shaft slowed considerably, but started to pick up speed again. It seems the little bit of grease I stupidly applied to the pilot bearing might be helping the shaft stick to the bearing a little. The way I can get around my problem is to first put the Cub in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd or reverse; for some reason 1st and 3rd aren't having problems. First gear slows the shaft to a stop, then I can shift to 2nd/reverse. I know the best fix is to break the tractor in half and do it properly, but that's for next summer.
