Joe, I read somewhere, someplace that a diesel needs to spin at least 250rpm to start (could be model specific). If it seems slow cranking to you, it probably is; starter, charging system or batteries perhaps? If it runs fine after it pops, I doubt if you have an engine problem. That smoke while it is cranking tells you it is getting fuel. My guess, Allan
