I took a look at the 300. Fundamentally, it's sound, but the devil is in the details. It ran
well, hydraulics were powerful, tires were excellent (all four). The loader had a dual acting dump cylinder, and was capable of picking
up a full load of dirt. The rear blade was competent, and would lift 3' off the ground.
The tractor has miles of hydraulic hoses (or so
it seems), and by switching some bypass valves, by
the seat, you can operate either the blade or the loader. There is no PTO of any kind on the rear of the tractor. The hyd. pump was run off the dist., and was the sole pump.

The electrical system was totally bastardized - light switch, lights, generator, and wiring are gone, and it just runs off the battery. The keyswitch and starter button were intact and worked. All gauges are either broken or nonfunctional. The tacho-speedo was intact, but not working, the other gauges were non-OEM and broken. Exhaust sytem is rusted out at manifold and weak elsewhere. Power steering leaked quite a bit, and the steering box is hard to get to (under gas tank). The steering did have plenty of boost when the loader was full. Entire tractor covered in years of grime and grease. It has been stored outside, probably not covered. The fuel system was a leaky, cobbled mess. No fittings had seen grease in years, and a few tie rod ends were sloppy. The data plate was buried under goo and I didn't get a chance to read it. The loader had been welded and repaired in several places - I can't imagine how large steel slabs get broken, but many loaders I see look like this! IT has a removable bucket face with a hay-spearing deal underneath - pretty clever.

I guess it's not that this is a bad tractor, but
I don't have the time to tear into the many areas that need work. At 18' long, it's quite a large
affair to store on my property.

I wish I knew what this was worth, in good shape.
He's asking 2900, and will take less. I don't
desperately need this tractor, but a loader would sure be nice at time. Am I nuts to pass this up, since the basic guts are good-to-go?

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
