The jerky lift is likely a faulty seal in the cylinder. Also could be the control valve. If there is a shut off valve (I know the 424 has one) that will hold the lift, raise the lift with a load on it and then shut off the valve. If the lift goes down, then the cylinder seal is bad and needs to be replace. You may also have to replace the piston.
