OT - limespreader ?

I tried posting over on the implement board a couple days ago and got nothing, so I thought that I'd try over here.

Currently, I am using a manure spreader to apply compost to vegetable ground. The trouble is that the compost is crumbly and mostly just falls off the back of the spreader. On average, I can get the application rate right, but would like it to be uniform.

The manual says to put in 1 1/4 T of lime, ~18 bu. in a 95 bu. spreader. To be practical, I will have to fill the spreader with compost, I am trying for 10-15 T per acre, depending on the crop.

I am assuming that the lime spreader attachment works like a pump. The blades on the lower beater push the material along the hood and throw it into the widespread.

Do you think that this will work ? How much tip clearence did they run between the paddles and the hood ? How high was the bottom edge of the hood from the chain ? How heavy was the hood ? Do you think the spreader will jam up (or bust the ratchet) if I try to fill the spreader ?

With no experience with a limespreader, I'm not too excited about spending all day putting something together that won't work.
