I have changed it with no problems. Operator's manual says to fill it to the reservoir opening, leave the filler plug out, start the tractor, and work the levers back and forth 10 or 12 times through their full range of travel, leave them in the rear position, shut off the tractor, add fluid to the bottom of the filler opening and replace the plug (world's longest sentence). It works. Clean the strainer while you are at it. If you think the system needs flushing, use the same fluid you normally use. Hytran or equivalent. Before you do all this it also says to "run the engine very briefly to drain the fluid from the pump and lines", AFTER you have drained the reservoir. I sure wouldn't run it more than a few seconds or less, or you will get a fried pump.
