I assume he has a distillate burner. It would have had 2 fuel tanks. The big one for distillate (kerosene), and the smaller one for gasoline. It was started on gasoline, and after it warmed up was switched over to distillate. The rod adjusted a set of shutters over the front of the radiator, to help keep the engine temperature up depending on the load. The higher temperature was necessary when burning distillate. Everone runs them on gasoline only now, but when they were new, distillate was considerably cheaper than gas.
