Bob - Punch below for a wiring diagram for your setup. Reason your SMTA runs on is whoever wired it up probably omitted the warning light in the alternator #1 terminal circuit. (The lamp not is there not only to warn when the alternator quits, it also limits backflow current from the alternator to the ignition coil when you open the ignition switch). If you don't want a warning light, you can substitute a 10 to 40 ohm, 1 watt resistor. Or install a 1N4004 diode in place of the lamp (wire the diode so the banded end connects to the alternator #1 terminal) Hope this helps...
