We've had an Oliver 1600 industrial (gas) for 25+ years. It came to us with a backhoe but we sold the 'hoe as we needed only the loader part. Anyway it's about a bullet-proof tractor as you're gonna find. My experience with 4-digit series Olivers (we've got 3 altogether) is they're highly reliable tractors - right up there with the letter series Farmalls. Only trouble we've had with the 1600 is the shuttle transmission (Oliver called it the "reverse-o-tork") Had it rebuilt shortly after we got it - worked good for a while but it's now is slow to engage after it warms up. However if the tractor you are looking at is gear drive there's no shuttle transmission to give you problems. To your oil problem I'd suspect a bad gage or possibly ice in the bottom of the pan as you suggest…
