I recall there sawmills around here run by everything from U-2 to a UD-18 power units, depending on mill size. Most common however seemed to be the -6 and -9, both U and UD flavor. Power to the mill was taken by belt from a Rockford (or Twin Disc?) PTO on the flywheel end of the engine. However in the case of the UD-18 the power unit was direct connected to a generator, then separate electric motors ran the saw and accessory drives. For some reason MM power gasoline units were also popular on sawmills around here. And there was at least one each Caterpillar and Detroit 4-71 diesel. The Detroit-powered mill you could hear running several miles away on a still day!
