The 354 may be equipped with a single plate clutch, a heavy duty single plate clutch, or a dual clutch. If it's standard single plate or heavy duty single plate it's pretty straight forward with friction disk, pressure plate, 3 release fingers and coil springs. If it's the dual clutch it's got two friction disks, two pressure plates, 3 release fingers and two large belleville washers as spring members. A single broken finger will cause the problem you describe as will a damaged friction disk. Or maybe the clutch pedal lever has slipped on the release shaft. All the clutches have specs for height of release fingers off the flywheel face and for other things as well. The dual clutch has additional specs to set the pto release point. Be sure you get the right friction disk for the clutch you have. One time I replaced the engine clutch disk in a 354 and the guy sold me the wrong disk. It may have been a heavy duty disk,
a little thicker than the right disk for that clutch. Needless to say, I did not notice the difference. It went together fine as for adjustments and such. I put the whole tractor back together only to find I could not release the pto clutch. The whole thing had to come back apart. A battle ensued with the parts supplier as he told me over the phone the disk was right and claimed I had screwed the clutch up. I took the clutch disk back and by the time I got there he had found the correct disk with a different part#.
