These tractors original equipment steering gears were a full cicle gear. They could then be repositioned after the first half wore out and then you had brand new gear teeth to mesh with the worm gear. The replacement gears, only have teeth on half of the gears surface. Either grease or oil will work. They came with gear oil (80-90wt) in them but as the seals started to leak, some folks put grease in them. You need to check more often with grease in there though.
