Aaron: Do you know if your rebuild kit is a basic or complete kit. There is a considerable difference. Basic kits are just that,BASIC! Usually conisists of gasket for bowl,throttle shaft,new needle & seat w/ gaskets,other misc. round gaskets. Complete kits are in themselves not always complete depending on your supplier. Complete kits have all of the above items as well as your choke valve and shaft, jets,springs,main & Idle adjusting needles and most importantly the piece you need at the bowl. This is called packing and is wedged in with a brass jam nut around your main fuel needle. Now many times I leave this piece in and untouched if possible because they can get expensive($3.00 I.H.) when you rebuild up to 90 carb/year. Ways to tell if the packing is ok, I use an o-ring pick or some other sharp point to lightly probe the packing as it sits in the carb(main needle and brass nut removed).If it flakes fairly easily or seems somewhat soft you should be o.k. If it seems hard and has a faded gray color you should remove and replace. Caution! Usually during removal the old packing will fall apart, tends to get into the main needle seat. Write back if you have any other questions. O, by the way many H carbs I rebuild have cracks around threads of main needle hole where packing sits, and drain hole. Some cracks are very small so if possible sandblast around these areas and do a thurough inspection.
