Doug, the conversion is very easy. the hardest thing is mounting the new alternator and aligning the pulleys so the belt runs straight. The most common alternator is the DELCO 10SI, you can get this from a 1975-85 chevy car or truck. Sell them at auto parts store for $40. just make sure it is the internal voltage regulator type built after 74 or 75. ---You run a heavy wire from the bug 1/4 inch lug on the alternator to the battery + terminal, usually thru the amp meter. you also put 12 volts to the #2 terminal on the alternator. the #1 terminal (spade terminal) as 12 volts when running, but is switched off by a key or toggle switch when not running. You can also use a smaller japaneese type alternator if you wish. main thing is to find which terminal is the "signal" or switched on and off with 12 volts. Starter dont care if tractor is 6 or 12 volt or + or - ground. --change all 6 volt lights to 12 volt--- all a dropping voltage resistor to the ignition coil if you have a distributor so you maintain 6 volts to the coil. if you have a magnito, dont worry.-- if you need more info, just ask.
