Actually, most tractors won't have a replacement block- tractor engines are most frequently renewed by changing sleeves and pistons, leaving the block and the serial number intact. The most common causes of replacement blocks are catastrophic engine failure (rod through the block) or freeze cracking (not checking the anti-freeze). Sorry my book wasn't a little clearer.
