That plate was used after you finished harvest so the wide front could be set back under the tractor allowing it to turn in a smaller circle. The axle extension was clamped on the right side; there was a LOT of pressure on those axle bearings! A notch was cut near the end of the axle to allow the bolt to locate the axle clamp and keep it from working off the end.
