I just bought a 1940 Farmall "A", which should keep me busy for another winter, but the serial number on the engine block indicates that it came out of a 1948 model. What is confusing is that it has the half moon cutout on the right front of the casting which would indicate that it may have been in a "B" or "BN" which to my knowlege ceased production in 1947. I don't remember that cutout being on the "A". Was it there all along on all models and I missed it? Not that it really matters, I'm just curious. Also, on the right hand side of the head, there are 2 sets of vertical tapped holes 1/4, or 3/16 between #1 and #2 spark plugs, and behind #4. What were these for? If restoring this is anything like the adventure getting it home from western Tenn. to Mich., then its going to be very interesting to say the least.
