I dont know a whole lot about it, but I did watch my Grandfather and what he did with his farm.
He only had 80 acres, with his WD 45 and a 53 ford running about 40 head of cattle. He made a proffit every year. Dont know how much he would never ever say.
But he watched all the neighbors get bigger and bigger and show up with all the bigger newer stuff to run it.
One day as the guy accross the road was having a new haybine delivered. My gramps looked at me and said " they are going to go broke". He then just walked into the house for dinner never said another word about it. In 1982 he was right the guy accross the street and a few more down the rd all had sales. In 1983 Gramps got a great deal on 600 acres near by. He paid cash for the land.
He then found that his AC all crop 66 was to small for the work to be done. He found a used Massey Ferguson self propelled combine at a sale for $1000. He used that for 4 or 5 years. Then sold the combine for $2000. He then sold the land for a tiddy proffit. Dumped the cash into CD's wile interest was at 18% in those days. He locked it in for as long as he could and went back to farming his 80 acres.
Not sure of the exact years of this as I didnt really care what was going on at the time. I was to busy farting around. But I did catch some of what he was doing.
