Hi, my dad, then my brother have owned the same 454D for over 30 years. The hour meter quit several years ago at about 5000 hrs. but probably in excess of 10,000 hrs on it. Great utility tractor. German Diesel runs for ever with minimal maintance. Had diesel go into the crankcase oil twice caused by an $8 oil seal on the Bosch injector pump.
As someone else mentioned the parking brake if accidently left on and the tractor driven the transmission/hydraulic system will be clogged with brake lining. Also the hydraulic brakes can be a problem when they are old and the seals start to leak and air gets in the brake lines.
Also check to see if power steering unit is leaking oil from under the dash down by the clutch and brake pedals. My brother's has leaked a little for 10 years now but not enough to fix yet.
Another caution is be careful connecting to other hydraulic cylinders make sure that they have the proper IH Hytran hydraulic oil in them.
My brother bought a used log splitter at an auction sale, brought it home connected it up to the 454D. What ever type of hydraulic oil was in that log splitter cylinder it did not mix with the IH Hytran and it foamed and bubbled and got air bubbles in the hydraulic brakes. Had to drain the whole system.
The Bosch injector can easily be adjusted so the 454D will crank out 50 HP.
