Not a bad idea at all. Right now you have a C-200 gas, they have a reputation for being gutless and real touchy about carb ajustments. It's a sleeveless engine besides, so you have to bore it to the next oversize if you replace the pistons. The switch to diesel shouldn't be too bad, but like any re-power, it will take some work and a little engineering. The engine you need is the D-239 four-cylinder German diesel. This engine was found in the 544, 574, 664, 674, and 684. You will also need the throttle linkage and fuel tank from a 544 Diesel, or you'll need to add a fitting to your existing tank for the fuel return line. Radiator might be different, too. It will go easier if you get frame rails from a 544 Diesel. If you get the engine from anything other than a 544, the oil pan and rear engine plate will be incorrect, the 64, 74 and 84 series (those were all British-built Utilities, 544 is American-built) had a cast oil pan that the front end bolted to, the Farmall 544 Row-Crop had a stamped-steel oil pan, not sure what the International 544 Utility had. Do you have a Row-Crop or a Utility? Since there are so many small differences between the gas and diesel, the easiest way for you to go might be to find a 544 Diesel parts tractor in a salvage yard. The D-239 is one of the best IH engines there is in terms of fuel economy, reliability, and very long life. We have three tractors, 826, 786, and 3088, with the six-cylinder version, the D-358 German diesel. The 826 and 786 both have almost 8,000 hours on them and have never been touched, and still run as well as the 3088 which only has 1800 hours. Someday I'm going to find myself a Farmall 544 Row-crop, gear drive, diesel. If you have any questions as you swap engines, just ask!
