Valve recession can definetly cause starting problems, but I would think that once it got running it would stay running. There should be a spec. in your manual for max valve recession. Do you have the valve lash set correctly (double check even if you are sure)? Have you done a compression test and leak-down test? How long are you running the glow plugs before and after starting? Give them about a minute before starting, even on a 90 degree day, and keep them on until the smoke clears up. Are all of the glow plugs working? These engines absolutly must have good glow plugs. Are you sure the fuel lines are fully blead? Did you stagger the piston ring end gaps?
