After mowing hay for a couple of hours, I climbed on tractor to move to another field. The tractor was idling. I pulled back on throttle 2-3 notches and heard the sound of metal crunching. The removal of the oil pan shows the pieces of the sleeve of no. 1 cylinder. It looks the two top rings on the piston may have been stuck. I don't know if this happened before or after the damage was done. I have had the H for 6-7 years. It was overhauled less than a year before I got it. It is a 1942 model and was working fine with no warning. I probably use it about 50 hours a year. The crankshaft and bearings look good. There was no mixing of oil and coolant. The piston is a little rough but I have been told it is worth repairing. Does anyone have any theories as to what caused this and what is the best repair approach-replace piston and sleeve and associated parts and gaskets or go further?
