I wasn't trying to start something. My philosiphy is if you set it to dealer specs ( where I worked as a mechanic for a few years) and it doesn't perform right then something is in need of attention.I have always been a mechanic on heavy equipment of some kind from the smallest gas engines to the biggest steam engines you can imagine. I don't use a timing light either on old tractors that get set at 0 deg. unless i need to see how much advance it is getting at a certain RPM. Different applications require different advance for whatever reasons. For example; if you use a distributer for standard iron pistons in an engine with IH firecrator pistons (like mine) I can guarantee you will lose power and not gain any. There is absolutely no way to tune it right. (I have tried.) Unless you have the proper advance springs and shaft kit installed.
I set timing by the book by lining up the mark then backing up the distributer a little and then turning it till the coil wire fires on no 1. Static timing is a lost art among most mechanics nowadays since it doesn't involve a computer and you would all be surprised how far off it will be if a typical mechanic times your points distributer. I have 2 antique cars and 2 tractors with points and maintain a few for freinds because they always got messed up before having tuneups done somewhere else.
my super c will fire off first time on the hand crank everytime no matter the temp and drag a plow with the best of them and the 300u Lp is almost as good now but I haven't had the time to get everything on it right yet since I just got it. I hate LP machines. More stuff to break and or leak. Oh well. It seems to be very popular here in west texas on older 40's through 70's tractors.
