I would definitly check for a hydraulic clutch--if you have a cab on it, it will be hard to see, but I have seen them either way. If it doesn't have a hyd. clutch there will just be a straight rod from the clutch pedal to where it goes into the bell housing. If it has the hyd. clutch there will be a small cylinder inline from the rod on at the clutch pedal. I have one neighbor with a '73 1066 that has a hyd. clutch and another with a '74 1066 that doesn't have one, but I am pretty sure it used to have one. I have one on my 966, and compared to my brothers 856, I couldn't live without it. You can add one on--if you can find one. I have been searching for one at salvage yards across Iowa and nobody has them and says if they do they are gone almost immediately--and they want no less than $300 for them.
If you do have one, I would make sure that it is working, if it is--then I would say your pressure plate is getting bad or maybe you need to give the throwout bearing a couple shots of grease. Hope this helps. Sorry for being so long winded.
