M wiring problem

My M stopped charging and now I have some questions about how to fix it properly. It has a 12 volt system on it. It has the normal push/pull switch on it and a push starter cylinoid to start it. It has a 12 volt alternator (unknown if it has voltage regulator built in), a coil (unknown if 12 or 6 volt or if a 12 volt if it has a resistor built in). Installed a ballast resistor but the tractor missed then so took it back out. It also has a black box which is about 2 x 3 inches. The black box has a 4 prong plug on it which the 2 wires from the alternor run to prongs 1 & 2. It also looks like the black box has a condensor on it. I disconnected the black box and ran one wire from the 2 prong plug to the battery connection of the alternator and one to the on/off switch. The tractor is charging now but the amp guage read 18 - 20 amps + depending if I have the lights on or not. My major question is what is the black box? Is it a voltage regulator? There looked like there was a wire that ran to the 3rd prong of the black box also. It looked like it ran to the wire that ran to the battery side of the alternator. Basically it looked like a cobb-job. Help on fixing this correctly would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
