400 IHC stuck in 3rd gear.

Hi fellas. Got a question for you that stumped me tonite. I have this 400 that I have an f11 farmhand loader on. I was loading the feedwagon tonite for father and I went to come out of 2nd gear after pulling up to the feedwagon and stuck it in reverse and it started to die, so I hit the clutch. Tried 1st gear and it about died again. Acted like it was in 2 gears at once. With the stick in the neutral postion, letting out of the clutch it would start to move over. Put it in R or 1 and it would start to bind up and die.
I yanked on that stick, twisted on that stick, pulled up, pushed down and kept trying to put it back into 2nd but it wouldn't go over. Would go into R and 1 just fine.....none others.
Then all of a sudden, I had it pryed over towards the 2nd gear and went to let out the clutch and heard some sort of a "pop" like something finally released. Now it works fine. Did I do something to cause that to get stuck in 2nd gear or is that a little quirk with that model? I've never heard of that problem before and this is the first time in 2 years it's done it. Really threw me for a loop. I was just about to go get a wrench and take the tower off to see inside what happened when it "fixed" itself. Any thoughts what happened other than the obvious that it was stuck in gear? Kinda would like to know what caused this so I can prevent that from happening again. Thank you.
