Brad: I can see where you ar coming from. I somehow doubt the manufacturer expected this equipment to be around this long. The shims have to be very clean, and no, nothing was used on them. It would defeat the purpose of a shim, some of those are very thin. I would clean surfaces very well and assemble. If you have any leaks go over the outside with gasket black. I once did this on a crack in oil pan of 6.2 Chevy diesel as a temporary measure. 5 years and 100,000 miles later it had never leaked and was still running every day.
