Sounds like it's time for a new soleniod. Possible that the soleniod contacts are going bad. Sometimes when they're going bad, you'll push the button about twenty times and only get the clicking, and on the twenty-first push of the button it will finally make contact and turn over. It could be that when you tryed to start it after you paused to shift the levers around, the solenoid disk finally made contact well enough to pass current through. The position of the shift levers has nothing to do with starting, they have no saftey switches, ect. It is possible for the shift linkages to rub through the wiring, but in that case, it wouldn't get any power to the solenoid and it wouldn't even click.
