Thanks for the feedback on the roto-tiller. I thought I got a good deal on it at an auction last year but then I was disappointed when I noticed it was missing half the PTO shaft (the tractor half). I finally got that replaced yesterday but I was taking some heat on the homefront for spending another $400 CDN to get the rototiller working. Given the soil we have I didn't really have any other choice. The land I have has likely NEVER been broken. The farmer up the road told me his family originally broke this land in 1905 and that the piece I have has always been used as pasture. About 5 years ago it was seeded for broam, wheat and rye pasture mix but still never really turned over. I started about a 1 acre vegetable patch last year but could only get the rental walk-behind rototiller to dig in less than 2 inches after multiple passes. By that time I was tired, sore and cranky. There are lots of 3-pt rototillers around here but I don't have either 3pt, or 2pt/fast-hitch. I came across this monster pull-behind rototiller from Seeman Equipment of Milwaukee Wisconsis (I might be wrong on manufacturer - it is at home, I am at work). The thing is quite large (6ft swath) and heavy but if I take is slowly and safely it feels like I should be fine with my 350U Wheatland Gas.

I am going to take some pictures of my little red workhorse on the weekend when I am doing my work. People always seem to like to see these things doing hard work, not just parades, so I will try to oblige. The tractor isn't nearly as pristine as some of the ones I see on here but it is a hard-working machine and I can't have an extended period of time without it to do a proper restore. Guess I need a second.....

Thanks again for the reassurance that I was spending good money getting that rototiller working.

Sean

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
