It sounds like your pump may be worn or you have a valve in the pump that is not closing all the way. Before pulling the pump I'd put a pressure gauge on the outlet to make sure the problem is not between the outlet and cylinder. I'm thinking your pump should read 450-500 LBS per square inch. Later pumps, or older ones with an improvement package installed in them should read between 750-800 LBS per square inch.

Dirt and sand are one of the major causes of pump failure. It dosen't take much and once the fluid is contaminated it starts wearing the pump surface. Normally the dirt enters when the ends of hydraulic hoses are unhooked and not capped, allowing blowing dirt and sand to blow into them. Or worse, they are laid or dropped on the ground and not properly cleaned.
