Posted by Zonie on May 10, 2003 at 22:37:58 from (172.154.18.43):

I set out to cut a fire brake today along a fence line about 2 miles long.
I had to drive my '48 H about 10 miles to get to the job. I was having fun traveling down the highway waving at the people as they went by. I finally got to the area I needed to work and set to work with my back blade. I was running through weeds as high as the hood on my H. it was really dusty. This last winter and spring have been very dry here in Tucson, Arizona. It looks like it's working up to be a really bad fire season.
any way I had cut about a mile of the fire brake when I tried to cross a "small" drywash and got the tractor stuck with the blade holding up the rear wheels. Thank God for cell phones. I had to call my daughter and told her to jump in my truck and come to where I was. I had to sit there for about an hour till she got there, at least it seemed like an hour or two.
It just took a few minutes to pull the tractor out and I sent her on her way and I went back to work plowing.
After making three passes and stirring up a heck of alot of dust, I was satisfied with the fire brake. Just as I started heading for home I noticed a cut in the sidewall of one of the rear tires but the tube didn't get cut.
I decided to take the side roads home instead of the highway route. It was a little longer this way but the cars going past aren't going 65 Mph. and there is a nice wide shoulder so I could take it easy on the tire and go a little slower.
I made it about 2 miles and the tube decided it just didn't want to go any further. After calling my house and getting no answer, I figured that I just better start walking.
Dang that was a long walk! I got home just before dark. hooked up the trailer and went to pick up the tractor.
an eventfull day that was susposed to just be a few hours of work.
I guess the walk didn't hurt me any and the tractor was purring along great till the tire gave out.
Now I have an excuse to replace the rear tires, if I just had the money to buy 2 new ones!

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
