I JUST finished repairing my wobbling steering in my Super M. I never had much of a problem in 1-4 gears, but 5th was horrible. Driving it for an hour straight would wake me up at night with Charlie horses in my arms from fighting the beast. Here's what you gotta do: Open the top cover off the steering bolster, and look for any obvious signs of wear. Note what kind of steering gear is in the top, a half gear or full gear. Jack the tractor up in the air about 5 inches, leave the front end on (only if you have narrow front) and unscrew the nut on top of the gear until the top of the nut is flush with the top of the threaded shaft. Take a hammer and TAP the top, it should come out easily (we used a 18 pound maul and ruined the threads, had to use a die to repair it). Remove the nut and pull the gear out. Run your finger along the teeth of the gear. If wore, it will dip in the middle of the gear. You'll feel it with your finger no problem. If you can, replace the half gear with a full gear (I have two or three if you want one), but if you already have a full gear turn it around 180 degrees. The best way I found was to do something, tighten the nut so it will hold, and test drive. Phenominal difference when I replaced that gear. Worm gear should be alright because it doesn't move that much, (I have one of them too) but I don't know what that would look like wore because mine works fine. When you put in the full gear, make sure you use almost a whole can of grease for lubrication, and PUT IT UNDER THE GEAR!!! I have mine on top and need to take it all back apart again, a greasy job I don't want to do. Otherwise the grease just sits on top of the gear with no usefulness. I replaced all of my steering bushings first (there are three: two vertical and one horizontal) and really spent a lot of time and money vs. fixing the gear only. In the final scenario, if the gear and worm look just fine, you need to check your bushings. There is a great big bushing about 4" in diameter at the bottom of the bolster (grease zerk right above the front wheels, to the left of the crank), and that takes the blunt of steering abuse, allowing the wheels to sway left or right.
