Ken: The 656 Diesel is a fairly simple engine to overhaul. I recently removed the head on mine to replace a blown gasket and decided to overhaul the whole thing. Split frame, removed engine and all. Two pieces of advise...... Make sure of which engine you have in the tractor before ordering the kit. There was an early model and late model engine in the 656. My early model tractor had the engine replaced with a later model. I looked at the serial number tag on the frame when I ordered the engine kit. All the sleeves were the wrong design. After my machine shop tried to make them fit, we had several problems and finally discovered what the problem was. Spend the extra money and order the piston and sleeves from Case. You'll be glad you did. Second...... Make sure you read the fine print on the head gasket. "this side up" means exactly that. It will fit both ways but one way blocks the 1/8" oil hole to the rocker assembly. I had to pull mine off again to get oil to the upper end. These are good tractors. Good luck.

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
