Jan - By "both directions" do you mean will a generator develop output with the armature spinning in either direction? Or do you mean will it generate in either polarity (i.e. positive or negative ground)? Anyway the answer to both is yes. However in the case of rotation, most generators are optimized by brush angle/location for clockwise rotation as viewed from the pulley end. Hope this answers your question!
