Have you checked all the obvious things? Gasoline in the starting tank? Getting a spark from the magneto? Getting gasoline to the carburetor?? Then there are the not so obvious. All the gas starting switch over mechanism must be working. Butterflys in the manifold change to send air through the carb. Decompression valves working?? The switch over mechanism locks up the carb float on the diesel side. If you are getting gas to the carb, it's likely ok. Also, if you have messed with the plug wires, you must be aware the magneto rotates counter clockwise. If you put the wires back as though it is a clockwise rotation, it will only backfire through the air cleaner and won't start. As for trying to start it on diesel by pulling it. If you are blowing white smoke, it means you are getting diesel fuel. Not usually recommended, but a shot of ether directed into the air cleaner intake will probably get it going. My MD had none of the gas start plug wires nor was the carb in working condition when I got it. The first couple times I started it it was with a shot of ether and the starter cranking it on diesel. Took about two tries with the ether to get it going. Of course that was in warm weather.
