It kind of is a trait. The PTO runs straight off A SHAFT, BUT, THE belt pulley is gear driven and this causes the noise, generally. You can pull the four bolts out and have it all in your hand in a few minutes. You're not going to mess anything up. Chec it before you pull it (with the engine off), put the PTO in gear, then take up the slack both ways with the pulley and check for excessive slack. There are usually severalshims behind the pulley housing. Then, there are usually some shims behind the bearing retainer behind the pulley. Take one at a time out of each, not all at one place. Another though: Better to be a little loose than a little tight.
