Red: I will stand corrected on that item, however as you point out the hitch that would have been the natural progression and would come into productiom in 1954, being the 400 hitch will not fit. I think we can safely assume no 450 fast hitches would have been in production at that time. That being the case all fast hitches on MTA's are add on.

The part of this that surprises me a bit is looking at MTA, 400 and 450 production numbers, there is not a great difference in the numbers of each around. To the avid collector anyone of these would be equally rare. However when you attend shows, look at YT gallery, etc., MTA far out number either 400 or 450. Now I will be quick to agree that letter series Farmalls are more popular to collect than others. I have SA, 130 and 140. I like the Super A best of the lot. People that come here will spend more time looking over the SA than others. There is something magic about a letter series Farmall. When IH hired Ray Lowey to design that tractor it definately was not one of their mistakes. If I were to start a serious collection and wanted a line of a series, it would be a toss up between letter series and 56 series. Those are my two favourite designs in IH tractors. If I wanted them purely to look at letters series would have the edge and if I were going to use and work them I guess 56 series would have the edge.

I am however not a purest, I have alternators on my tractors, more comfortable seats, modern lighting and tires. I believe people who go to shows and profess to be purest, should in fact be just that. I am aquainted with a guy who has every Farmall letter series including Supers from 1939 to 1954. Not just one of each in cases of gas, diesel, all fuel, propane, V, including W. His collection is close to 85 tractors. For the most part it is quite an authentic collection, however as he was nearing completeion on having all models possible he started cutting some corners. I remember him comming to a show in my hometown. He brought six tractors amoung them an H with wide front and ty-rods behind axle. The kicker is wide front it was locally fabricated and used MF 165 spindles, hubs, wheels and ty-rods. He had one H#$% of a miserable day as he first tried to claim this wide front was an IH option. His location was poor, that valley probably had more Farmall H's in 1953 than any other tractor. Every old codger up and down that valley picked that H apart that day. They also went over his other 5 tractors with a fine tooth comb. I overheard him talking with his brother near end of day, while two more old codgers were picking the H apart some 30 feet away. He said to his brother," I guess we should have left that H home, these people know their Farmall H's."

Today's Featured Article - Picking Corn - by Rick Nikolich. It was the day before Christmas shutdown at work and I asked our lead engineering expert Scott Andrzejewski what he was going to do over the holidays. He said that he had some corn that he still needed to pick with an antique one-row New Idea corn picker. Scott has a nice farm about an hour north of Lansing in St. Johns, MI. He wanted to get the rest of his corn in by the next day (Christmas Eve). We had about an inch of new snow on the ground and single digit temperatures. So in the bac ... [Read Article]
