Best plan would be to take the M starter to a competent starter shop and get it rebuilt. Also have the shop put a NEW manual starter switch on it. Get rid of the existing battery cables, and the starter solenoid if used. Install new #0 or larger cables with soldered (not clamped) terminals. Doing all the above, and installing a new 6 volt battery will make your M start like new! For the ignition, if the coil circuit had a ballast resistor added when it was converted to 12 volts, get rid of the resistor. Or if a "12 volt" coil was used, you'll need to replace the coil with a new 6 volt coil. Finally if the original generator is still in place, installing a new 6 volt regulator and polarizing the generator will take care of battery charging issues. However if an alternator or a 12 volt generator was swapped in, you'll need to get rid of the alternator or generator and replace with a 6 volt generator and regulator. Also if the tractor is now wired up negative ground, you'll need to swap the connections at the ammeter - otherwise the ammeter will read "backward" on 6 volt positive ground. Good luck!!
