Actually disc brakes on the farmall 300 are very powerful if they are rebuilt right. I operated my 300 for 10 years with poor brakes that chattered severely and it would barely stop under it own weight on a hill. Although sanding the pads and actuating disc's 5 years ago did little to improve them, I recently decided to take them apart to get to the bottom of the problem. What I found when mounting the actuating disc's on my lathe, Was that the actuating disc's where never originally cut true at the IH factory.
The initial give away to this problem is that the actuating disc's will have very shiny high spots on them of which this is the only part that is coming in contact with the fiber disc's, thus greatly reducing stopping power. My secret to cutting these acuating disc is to get them real clean, lightly (very carefully) remove the high spots of the ball bearing ramps. Then bolt the actuator disc's together with the ball bearings in the ball bearing ramps. Then mount the pair of bolted toghter actuators on the lathe and cut one actuator disc to true it up. Then reverse to cut and true up the other actuator disc. After finished cutting them, Make sure that each ball bearing is kept track of to be put back into same ramp that it was in during the cutting process when unbolting the actuator's for cleaning. I also cut and true up the bearing retainer disc plate and housing disc area and took the appropriate amount off the brake housing to tighten up play between every thing. Although I did a few other things that probably helped some also, (Too much to explain now), This was the main stopping problem. My 300 will stop smoothly and can easily skid the calcium filled tires with a baler on back even on asphalt. Its just like having power brakes. I had thought of cutting the brakes for others, but I don't know if any money could be made since it does take time to cut them right.
