Int'l 454 Transmission repair

The high range is out on the 454 Int'l. We know part of the shifter fork is broken -found it in the bottom of the transmission a while back. My mechanic sez it will be between 3 and 4 thousand dollars to break it down and repair it. I wanted to put in used parts from a salvage yard but he sez no -the wear on the gears won't match up. Is this possible?
Is this a reasonable price? Another customer came in with a quote for his tractor from the jd dealer for a minor transmission job (won't go in reverse) for 5 thousand on a hundred h.p. tractor. My 454 is a smaller tractor - 38 h.p. and I would think a lot easier to work on.
I figure a day to break it down, a day to replace the parts and a day to put it back together at about 60 per hour. Fifteen hundred plus parts?
I wonder about this repair place - when I drove up today they were trying to push it inside the yard but couldn't- I had left the emergency brake on when I dropped it off and they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't roll in neutral.
Anybody out there have a 454 with a similar problem? Any suggestions. The tractor is about a 72 model. I have gotten by with it in the lower 4 gears but need more speed when mowing hay and moving from one field to the other down the road.
