My retired father has some ground in the program. He hires me to look after it as far as weed control and so on. It is a good deal for him since he is retired and now sight impared and don't see well. He initially got it in the program for 10 years in the late 80's for not much less than the going rate for cash rent. At the end of the 10 years, he had the option of it remaining in the program for another 10 years for a $10 an acre cut from what it was. The land was share cropped before entering the program and the X-tenant had to sign a release for land owner to get 100% of payments. Either that or the landowner had to farm it himself for 3 years, otherwise would not reap the 100% payments. The landowner had to see that it got sewed to grass and get a good stand and then maintain weeds and trees. Ended up mowing the thing several times the first 2 or 3 years. After that, there was a pretty good stand of (he planted his to) brome grass. Since then it has been a minimal matter of killing some noxious weeds at times, and staying on top of trees coming up. As long as you stay on top of the weeds and trees, they are not much of a problem. Its when you let them get away from you, is when it turns into big problem. A guy randomly checks it out, and if he sights a problem, you will get a warning letter in mail. If that happens, he will re-visit and if problem isn't cleared up you could lose part or all of payment. You have to abide by all gidelines which could probably be different according to area. Also, not all farm ground meets the qualification for program. It has to meet the qualifications to be excepted. Good program for some individuals, but maybe not for everyone. Fits almost perfect for those landowners that are retired. Maybe not quit the same cup of tea for somebody still trying to make there money and earn a living off of the land. Unless the ground really fits into the "shouldn't be farmed" catagory.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
