You can "get by" with using some Bondo on the crack. I know several around here that have been running over 30 years with it. On some of them, before they cracked on the side, they also cracked the top of the block. One some rare occasiona, they also cracked the head. If they do crack the head, you can replace the head and get by from now on. The sealing point is the top of the sleeves, anyway. Now, of course, if you want it "like new" and want to spend the money you can fix it "right" If you want to use it, this method will work fine.
