No question, keeping the rpm down on a diesel is what gives it long life. If your going to run at 2800 to 3000 rpm you may as well run gas. At least gas engine would be cheaper to buy.

6.2 Chevy was another good one, guys wanted that big noise and bought them with 4.10 rear ends at 60 mph they were turning 3000 rpm and flying apart by the dozens. I had one with 3.24 gears, turned 1800 at 60 mph, at 15 years and 400,000 miles truck fell apart. the engine is now in another newer truck.

Look if you will at those 500 hp Cats in trucks, turning 1650 at 60 mph. When your on the highway pulling 60 tonnes at 45 mph. You can step on it in the gear you are in or you can shift up a gear, and gain speed just as fast. So many people have missed the point of diesel having maximum torque at low rpm. I have been on highway on ice and snow, if I had shifted gears truck would have spun out. I have lugged that Cat to 1000 rpm a few times.

One must agree though, the vast number of diesels on the go today are in line sixes.
